So, Midi Shanghai is official.  See the press release that we just received after the jump.  Unfortunately, this press release clarifies little.  What bands? What ticket price?  Will it happen in Beijing?  Has it moved from Beijing to Zhenjiang. Still, it’s great that we will actually have a festival in Shanghai after a very barren 2008.

(April, 2009, Shanghai)The official MIDI Music festival will be held in Shanghai on May 1st and 2nd in 2009 on 3 indoor and outdoor stages at Red Town, Shanghai Sculpture Space. The MIDI music festival is the biggest outdoor rock festival in Mainland China and will be the largest party in Shanghai of the spring and summer this year. “MIDI Music Festival” is arriving in Shanghai for the first time and it will bring an exhilarating International Festival Vibe and diverse musical party to music and party lovers in Shanghai. Various music styles by well-known international and Chinese bands will be presented. From Indie, Metal, Punk, Techno, Hip-Hop, Folk to Drum’n’Bass and more in these 2 days, MIDI is bringing all music lovers and party people a taste of all music styles from all over the world , great live music experience and “Music Carnival” held in the City.

MIDI is coming to Shanghai and will reflect the various music styles in this city. MIDI is a party featuring Rock, Electronic, Hip-Hop and Folk, Music. Attendees will be able to experience many different music styles and bands playing on MIDI’s 3 different Stages Rock, Electronic/Hip-Hop and Unplugged/Acoustic.

The MIDI Music Festival is a big music party, held in Beijing over the past ten years it has attracted over 70,000 people annually the last three years it was held 2005-07.

Like previous MIDI festivals in Beijing, Shanghai Midi festival will feature a lot international bands to and local bands playing on the same stage. The festival will have Rock stage, Electronic stage and Folk stage. All stages will feature non-stop music from 12pm to 11pm.

As China’s most famous festival brand, MIDI has something for everyone, big international quality production and there is no another festival that can compare with it in China. This year, MIDI comes to Shanghai with the blessing of the local government and allows the Shanghai music fans that have been craving Beijing MIDI will have their dreams come true. “Shanghai is a big city, and I am confident this time the rock scene could spread out to Shanghai”, said MIDI’s founder —Beijing MIDI school Principal Zhang Fan. Zhang Fan has high hopes for Shanghai; he thinks it’s a city that could let all kinds of music flourish. MIDI has come to Shanghai and Chinese Rock and Electronic has more room to grow.

The first MIDI festival was held in Beijing on May 1 2000 at MIDI school’s hall and featured more than 30 more bands, a thousand people everyday and came to be known as the only “WOODSTOCK” style festival for Chinese rock and modern music fans. After that it was held annually and grew larger every year. It grew from a single concert hall to an outdoor park, from a single stage to multiple professional stages featuring Rock, Electronic, Hip-Hop, Folk, and Experimental among other styles.

Over 10 years the MIDI festival has been instrumental in helping nurture the development of Chinese Rock and other modern music forms.

Zhang Fan thinks the festival is a great opportunity to bring Chinese modern music to the world as well as an excellent platform for both international and Chinese bands to share a stage.

May 1 and 2 of this year, MIDI invites you to join its 10th birthday, enjoy passionate rock music, and witness the promotion and development of rock music in the present and future of Shanghai. We hope everybody will have a good time!
