The strength of China’s domestic music scene

Mainstream mandopop is going strong in China

This site mostly concentrates on international touring artists and the “underground” domestic scene.  Sometimes it paints a difficult picture of the landscape here, which is certainly the case for these sectors, but this doesn’t mean that the music industry in China is all doom and gloom.  In fact, the pop end of the industry is working very nicely for those in it, most particularly

  • reality TV
  • endorsements
  • gala performances (the bizarre concept of taking X number of the hottest “stars” at that moment and get all of them to perform/ lipsynch one song each for glowstick waving fans on national TV)

One of the biggest recipients of this is Chris Lee, aka Li Yuchun, who won the now-iconic national “talent” competition that is Supergirl in 2005.  You can see her in action (and causing considerable angst among the crowd HERE (it’s a pretty funny video – watch!)).  Ms. Li booked in a show on December 26th at the recently christened Wukesong Arena.  Tickets priced at

280、480、680、880、1280、1480、1680

which is not really that cheap for a domestic star.  Would you in the UK pay £100 for Alexandra Burke? Americans, I imagine you already pay US$200 for the pleasure of Kelly Clarkson. The real rub though is this – the concert for Li Yuchun sold out 10,000 tickets in 24 hours – seriously.    That’s a pretty extraordinary feat anywhere, but in a city that is traditionally reserved about paying big money for shows, this is one big (and we imagine, profitable) show.

You can see where you could have purchased tickets HERE.
