Sinica Podcast goes Musical

Kaiser Kuo and Jeremy Goldkorn have been running the excellent Sinica Podcast for a while now, running the gamut of all things China: economics, politics, the internet and… the music industry. We were honored to be speaking in such illustrious company – Split Works laoban Archie (and oftentimes author of this tome) and economist/ music label impresario Michael Pettis joined Kaiser and Jeremy for an hour of opinions, product plugs and mutual love.

In depth with Douban

Our friends over at Danwei (sadly blocked by our own most favorite net nanny) recently sat down with Ah Bei, CEO of culture focused SNS, Douban.  Douban has been going for 4 years, and recently has been on a tear.  According to our research, Douban’s registered user base expanded from 4m in April to a shade over 8m today.  It focuses on art, books and music and centres around “interests”, linking likely souls.  It is increasingly used as the basis for campaigns by the more “thoughtful” brands. Police getting tougher in the nightclub playgrounds?

Thanks to our sharp eyed friends at Danwei for this one.

This article, which describes not only a police raid on Gongti’s most successful superclub Coco Banana, but also the arrest of Chinese superstar Man Wenjun for possession of drugs.

Special K and friends are more common in China’s nightclubs than you would expect, but usually club owners have potential repercussions under control.  This smacks to us of a set up.
