Benoit Florencon, a Shanghai based photographer, recently self published a photo essay that dives deep into the home studios that put out many of the underground beats that make up Shanghai’s musical underbelly.
It’s a nice snapshot of the scene in general – 70% of the artists featured are not Chinese, an accurate representation of what’s happening here at the moment. MIA summarizes the reasons why
young people here have a lot of pressure during childhood – they don’t have free time to care about or explore art and music.
Out of a self imposed 2 year (ish) exile, returns PAUSE with two albums and the inevitable launch party. PAUSE emerged a couple of years back as the collective head of the Shanghai’s big independent promoters, Phreaktion, Antidote, Uprooted Sunshine and damnit, memory escapes us what the E stands for. They used to put on great little all Sunday parties at the old 4Live and print and hand out free compilation CDs of local artists.
Now they are back with some serious heavy hitters. AM444 which is MC ChaCha and beat maker Jay Soul who are releasing their Eye Wonder record, and SIG, an electronic producer from Qingdao who is releasing his Sad Mirror album.
Launch parties are both in Shelter, Shanghai, with AM444 going first tomorrow (1st April) followed by SIG next Friday (8th April). Both shows are 50RMB and include the respective CD, which is a pretty sweet deal if you ask us. Check the video below for some dub inflected soul from the AM444 crew…
