Douban Radio

Douban, China’s leading SNS for arts enthusiasts, recently launched a “radio” service. It looks to be in beta at the moment, and essentially is a music player backed by a database of uploaded songs. It plays these songs at random according to perceived users’ taste.  There are, of course, no hosts!

If you don’t like the song that the radio is playing, you can throw it into the “litter bin”; in time, Douban will “learn” your tastes and be able to cater to them more accurately.

Currently, the offering of songs is very limited. If you listen for an extended period of time, you will probably hear the same song repeatedly.

This seems to be direct competition to Neocha’s NEXT player. You can try Douban Radio HERE (you need an account).  What do you think?  How does it compare with NEXT?

As a big fan and daily user of Douban, I’m definitely excited to try this out, although it seems to be only available to certain users so far (not me yet).

In terms of it being a competitor to our NEXT player, I am 100% in support of any tool that helps give more exposure to independent music in China. The Douban team has the best tech team in China and I sincerely hope this radio function helps push music tastes forward.

Good call Sean. I love the NEXT player and agree that the more music that Chinese kids are exposed to, the better for all of us.

    Big up Neocha!

    Hi Sean
My friend just gave me an invitation of the douban radio. I’ll try to get you one if you want. so far they are palying me taiwanese pop songs… even though i added most of US hip-hop music in my list. But i also think they will be popular someday.

I admire your spirit when facing this competitor of Neocha. I don’t know how to describe this feeling and spirit in English. maybe u can teach me a word. XP

add me on douban if you want:
